100 mile run? They did it!

I think many of you already know that Forest Facility founders, Darren and Sarah, are rarely sitting still. Whether they’re taking guests down the ziplines, supporting groups around the assault course, or bringing new adventures to life in the forest, they are always on the move.

Last week, however, their fitness levels were tested in a whole new way as they set off to run 100 miles from Glamis Castle to Stirling Castle.

Why? I’m sure that’s the question many of us were asking as we followed their gruelling journey through some of Scotland’s wildest terrain — day and night.

Darren has long been involved in Rat Race adventures, often acting as both participant and unofficial test pilot for some incredible endurance events. This latest challenge completed the set of 3 Scottish 100-mile races that Rat Race have developed.

Sarah, on the other hand, despite being incredibly fit, had never attempted anything longer than a marathon before… which, let’s be honest, is still an amazing achievement in itself!

When they first agreed to take on the challenge, it almost sounded manageable when spoken out loud: running 100 miles. But as the start date drew closer, the reality of both the distance and the mental challenge truly began to sink in.

Alongside the personal challenge, Darren and Sarah also decided to raise funds for local charity, Anna’s Hope. Over the years, Darren has raised more than £50,000 for charitable causes and didn’t want to miss the opportunity to raise both funds and awareness once again. Together, they have already raised more than £2,000 — and donations continue to grow.

Darren completed the 100 miles in an incredible 32 hours, with Sarah crossing the finish line in 36 hours, and we honestly could not be prouder of them both.

Although they ran independently, they kept each other going through voice notes, tracking each other’s progress, and checking in whenever possible along the route. Out of a team of just 10 runners, eight completed the race and two were forced to retire.

Every step tested both their physical and mental strength. Every mouthful of food and sip of water mattered as their bodies tried to cope with the relentless strain of ultra-distance running. Thankfully, the Rat Race support team were there throughout the journey — providing food stops, foot taping, encouragement, and plenty of motivational chat along the way. (Although there was one section with no road access and no mobile signal… eek!)

Make sure you ask Sarah to show you her blister photos next time you visit Forest Facility!

With breathtaking scenery, uneven terrain, exhaustion, and many hours spent completely alone with their thoughts, completing this challenge is an extraordinary achievement for them both.

And yet, when they crossed the finish line, they somehow looked as cool as cucumbers — as though they’d simply popped out for a quick jog around the block.

Now, over a week later, they’re still adjusting to life after ultra-running. There’s been LOTS of food, even more chocolate, and sleep grabbed at every possible opportunity. But they’re back walking, slowly running again, and settling back into everyday life in the forest.

When asked whether she’d do it again, Sarah smiled and immediately replied:

“110% yes!”

Keep a listen out on PCRFM next Thursday 4th June as these legends will be talking about the experience.
